TTT: Books On My TBR I Hope I’ll Really Enjoy

Hey guys, Hocks here. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Go check it out! This week’s topic is books on my TBR I predict will be 5-star…

So….I don’t actually make TBR lists. Whoops.

I have been meaning to make one for awhile now (read: several years). I’m at the point now to where I’m trying to read through my entire bookshelf instead of buying new books… This is a huge problem for me because I know the majority of those books won’t be 5-star reads. Most of them are series I never finished, or things I randomly picked up and know very little about. That said, for this particular post, I will be including books that I want to read but aren’t necessarily on my TBR list. I’m also very bad at predicting my reads. I don’t often rate books 5-star, so even if I had 100 books at hand, it would still be hard to find 10 5-star books.

So let’s change the prompt just a bit.

10 Books on my TBR I think I’ll Really Enjoy

There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon

This book looks so adorable to me and the synopsis sounds amazing. I absolutely loved When Dimple Met Rishi, and after being briefly introduced to Sweetie in As Kismet Would Have It, I became that much more excited to read this. I do own this book, and it will be my first read once Pondathon is over. I have been avoiding reviews of this book, but I have such high expectations.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I bought this book off Amazon because it was on sale and it sounded great, and then never read it. As goes most of my books. However, I’ve avoided it long enough that if I do love it the rest of the trilogy is already available to binge. That’s a plus, right? Anyway, I really like the synopsis of this book. Sisters, kidnapping, arranged marriage. Plus an added circus vibe. I’m interested. I’m usually pretty invested in unique YA fantasy. This is another I have avoided information and reviews about.

One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus

One of Us is Lying was the first book I ever bought outright on Amazon for full price. I have no idea why I did it, especially since mystery is totally not my genre, and I hadn’t even seen anyone talking about the book. But I bought it. And I fell in love. And here we are, getting the chance to return to Bayview High once again with a whole new crew. I have yet to get my hands on this book, but this was one of my hype books for 2020 and I can not wait to read this.

Cursed by Thomas Wheeler

I don’t know much about this book, so I don’t actually have any reason to believe this would be an enjoyable read for me. But I always like a fairy tale retelling, and I’m liking the fact it’s based off King Arthur because I never see these. And then we have the whole “choosing a queen instead of a king” thing going on, and I’m hoping this will be good. This is another book I plan to read immediately following Pondathon, but I also know that the reviews are slightly lower on this than I would like, which honestly worries me quite a bit.

As Old as Time by Liz Braswell

Finally something I get to read sooner rather than later! This is one of my TBR books for Pondathon. I just love Beauty and the Beast retellings. They’re my favorite. I bought three of the Twisted Tale books on a whim because for one, they were on sale, and two, they had a Mulan retelling, and I wanted it. I haven’t read any of these yet, but I’m hoping good things for all of them. If nothing else, I hope this one is good because the tagline for this book makes me want to read it so badly: “What if Belle’s Mother cursed the Beast?”

A Heart so Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer

I can’t wait until I can get my hands on this book. I adored the first Cursebreakers book and it instantly became one of my favorite Beauty and the Beast retellings of all time. The world, the characters, I just loved everything. This story follows Commander Grey after the events of the the first book, and I am so ready to learn more about him. This is one of my most anticipated reads for 2020!

Tweet Cute by Emma Lord 45045129

I just happened to come across the synopsis for this book a few days back and instantly wanted to read it. I believe this book was just released two weeks ago, so I haven’t looked at any reviews, but I have been enjoying YA contemporaries lately. Add in rivals to lovers romance and social media shenanigans and this book sounds so adorable. I have no idea how long it will take before I am able to find and read this book, but I really hope it’s a cute modern read like I’m looking for.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman 28954189

This is another of those books that I know basically nothing about. I’ve seen it around before, and I absolutely love Neal Shusterman’s Unwind series, so I’ve been wanting to give another of his series a shot. While I do also own Everlost, the synopsis for this book looks more interesting to me. However, while I hope I’ll like this book, it will not be one that is an immediate read.

Permanent Record by  Mary H.K. Choi 43562239. sy475

So…originally this spot belonged to Frankly in Love by David Yoon, but my feelings toward that book have started changing due to a variety of factors and reviews, so here’s Permanent Record instead. From the synopsis, I like the description of the two main characters and the idea behind their “meet cute”, and I also like the “things get out of hand when people find out” direction, so this is one I’m expecting good things from. As romance is not a genre I love, a lot of it will revolve around how well the characters are developed, however.

His Dark Material trilogy by Philip Pullman

I have owned the box set of this series for some time now. It’s perched on top of my bookshelf. I don’t know why I haven’t read it. Everything about this series screams that I’ll love it, and the creativity found in this series is amazing. (I have seen things about this book, as well as watched the movie so I have general ideas to at least the first book.) I guess even though it seems like the type of fantasy story I would love, I’m worried that I’ll read it and be disappointed. so I’ve avoided it.

Have you read any of these books? Do you want to read any of these? Feel free to share in the comments! Also feel free to share your own Top Tuesday posts – I’d love to see what you have on there!

  1. I bought As Old As Time for my mother-in-law for Christmas, because she loves B&tB, too (even though she doesn’t read often), and she absolutely devoured it and then ordered herself another book in the Twisted Tales series, so … I guess that speaks a lot about the book? xD I hope you enjoy it as much as she did lol.

So much yes to Scythe! I absolutely love that series and can’t recommend it enough. 😀

    Here’s my TTT post.

  2. The Dark Materials trilogy was quite ok when I read it, long, long time ago. It was quite original, which is quite a feat since nowadays it looks like everything has been written about already.

I don’t have a TRL, I just have the pending books on a shelf and pick them up in order. I don’t stop buying books just because I have many books in my pending queue. I just schedule my purchases so I read more books than I buy until my pending shelf does not have many novels in it anymore.

So far I am blasting The Wheel of Time off my list. A lot of books to go.

    1. I definitely don’t have the resolve to just read the books in order. Not to mention my bookshelf isn’t organized enough for that… Most of my buys are spur of the moment depending on if I find them at a thrift store or if if they’re on sale at a bookstore, so sometimes I’ll buy ten books at one time and sometimes not be able to buy anything for months. Between that and library visits, I don’t often read a lot of what’s on my shelf. But one book at a time, we’ll get through them eventually.

I agree that a lot of works don’t have an originality factor. Sometimes I can appreciate reading a similar story told in a completely different way- one reason I love fairy tale retellings. However, it can get boring to read the same story line over and over again.

    1. Thank you! This makes me excited! I’ve been hearing a lot of good things for Scythe, so I might just have to move that one up on my TBR list! And yeah, I’ve heard so many mixed reviews about Cursed, but I still can’t wait to give it a chance.

  3. Oooh, Cursed is also on my TBR! I really hope it’s good and I can’t wait for the Netflix show to release. I’m a complete sucker for Arthurian retellings—one of my all-time fav shows is the BBC show Merlin!! (I 100% recommend it if you haven’t seen it before)

    1. I think it coming on Netflix is one reason why I’m expecting such good things from Cursed, and why I’m so excited to read it. I haven’t seen Merlin yet, but I’ve heard good things about it. I believe it’s on Netflix, so I’m going to have to add that to my watch list! I hope you enjoy Cursed as well!
